10 GeoGuessr Clues That Reveal the Country Instantly

10 GeoGuessr Clues That Reveal the Country Instantly

Top GeoGuessr players don't recognize every road on Earth. They check a short list of clues, in the same order, every round. Learn these ten and you will find the right country far more often — and you will understand exactly what a GeoGuessr helper does for you on the rounds where no clue is visible.

1. Driving Side

Look at parked cars and road signs. Left-hand traffic instantly limits the options to about 75 countries and territories, including the UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Indonesia and Thailand.

2. Script and Language

Cyrillic, Greek, Thai, Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese and Korean scripts are easy to tell apart. In Latin-script countries, accents and letters like ø, ł, ő or ñ are strong hints.

3. Web Domains and Phone Numbers

Shop signs and trucks often show a website or a phone number. A domain like .pl, .br or .co.za gives away the country in one look.

4. Road Lines

Yellow center lines are common in North and South America; most of Europe uses white lines. Some countries use yellow outer lines or dashed white edges that experienced players recognize instantly.

5. Bollards

The small posts on the side of the road have a different shape and color in almost every European country. Learning the bollards of France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the Nordic countries pays off quickly.

6. License Plates

Even when blurred, plates give hints through their shape and color: yellow rear plates in some countries, long narrow EU plates with a blue band, square plates elsewhere.

7. Utility Poles

Concrete, wooden or metal; with holes, stripes or special insulators — poles are surprisingly specific and are one of the most reliable clues in rural areas.

8. The Sun

If the sun is in the north around midday, you are in the southern hemisphere. A simple look at the shadows can save you from guessing on the wrong side of the equator.

9. Vegetation and Soil

Red soil, palm trees, birch forests, rice fields or dry grassland each point to specific regions. Combined with the driving side, vegetation often narrows it down to a couple of countries.

10. The Street View Car and Camera

The Google car, the camera generation and even the color of the image can be clues. Some countries were only covered by a certain camera, and advanced players use this to separate neighbors.

When There Are No Clues

Some rounds give you nothing: an empty road, a field, a forest. That is where most points are lost — and where a GeoGuessr helper changes the game. TrustGeo doesn't guess from the image like a human does; it reads the exact location of the round and shows the coordinates, a map and the address in Chrome's side panel. You can use it to check your guess and learn the clue you missed, or let AutoPlace drop the pin for you.
